We don’t like problems. They make us uncomfortable, fearful and anxious. We don’t like problems because they force us to look at ourselves – to see how we can resolve or live with the new situation. Some of us don’t really like what we see about ourselves and the changes we may have to make. We try to wish away the reality of the situation “It shouldn’t be this way” so that we don’t have to deal with it.
Nonetheless, it is important to look at reality, look at the problem for what it is and not try to change it. And then deal with.
The first step in accepting reality is gaining awareness that we’re resisting it. If we’re feeling bitter or resentful, wishing things were different or thinking about how life isn’t fair, we might be fighting reality.
Then, we have to acknowledge that there’s no going back to the way things were. Doing this may be challenging and painful, but by identifying what we can and can’t control, we can turn our energy toward addressing and coping with the reality.
